Unsafe Louisiana rental cars can result in serious bodily injury

When people rent cars, they likely are considering style and comfort before looking up the car's safety rating. Most would assume that the cars available by rental companies are closely inspected, regulated and are routinely maintained.

Unfortunately, most car companies aren't properly maintaining or fixing recalled vehicles and sometimes companies forgo common safety options, putting Louisiana customers at risk of serious bodily injury or death. Now, two senators are furthering the call for regulation of an industry that has sometimes put profits before safety.

Two Baton Rouge residents die in fatal accident

Car accidents can be devastating for victims and families. When a car crash takes a person's life unexpectedly, the victim's family may have to deal with not only an emotional struggle, but a financial struggle. If the victim of a Baton Rouge wrongful death was depended on by family members for income to sustain the family's lifestyle, the family may be forced to make hard decisions financially on top of mourning the loss of their loved one.

Late last week, two Baton Rouge residents were killed in a car accident that also took the life of three other people. A driver was driving the wrong way down Interstate 10 when they struck another vehicle head on, carrying the four people including the two from Baton Rouge. Now the families of those killed have to deal with funeral arrangements and costs, as well as loss of future income, in addition to the emotional hardship.

Drowsy drivers cause car accidents, new tech trying to help

Each year, car companies are increasing the number of features they put in their vehicles. Many people make buying decisions based on the safety rating and features that a certain car provides. Lately, car makers have been using new sensory technology to mitigate the most common safety concerns of drivers.

This technology can be extremely beneficial, but some experts warn that the advancement of technology might give drivers a false sense of security, possibly causing a car accident when a driver becomes overly dependent on technology that sometimes fails.

Wrongful deaths of pedestrians may affect Baton Rouge residents

We've all seen the drivers driving too fast in congested areas. Sometimes drivers drive negligently through highly trafficked pedestrian areas, which have lead to an increase in the number of wrongful deaths of pedestrians last year. Although the exact reason for the increase is still unknown, it was likely preventable.

Many times, drivers in Baton Rouge drive too fast and many of them are more distracted than in the past because of developing technology. These distractions have lead to a 4.2 percent increase in the number of pedestrian fatalities and a 19 percent increase in the number of crashes resulting in injuries to pedestrians in 2010.

Sleep apnea contributes to truck accidents in Baton Rouge, US

Those big rigs driving down the road can be pretty scary. Many times they are driving at speeds well over the posted limit, carrying tons of heavy products making them harder to stop in an emergency situation. That on top of a lack of quality sleep may be contributing to truck accidents in Baton Rouge and across the United States.

Sleep apnea is a new culprit that may be contributing to an increase in the number of truck accidents, and now recommendations are in the works to try to prevent accidents that may be caused by fatigue. Fatigue is a symptom of sleep apnea, a condition that affects breathing during sleep, causing those affected to not get proper sleep. This condition could lead to drivers falling asleep behind the wheel.

Louisiana woman killed in pedestrian accident

Pedestrians are some of the most fragile hazards on the roads. If a driver is not paying attention and strikes a pedestrian, that individual does not have the luxury of being surrounded by life-saving technology like a fellow motorists does.

We are reminded of this in a case of a Louisiana woman's wrongful death. The 39-year-old woman from Port Allen, Louisiana was recently struck by a 1999 Mercury Cougar on west U.S. 190. The 36-year-old man behind the wheel, who was also from Port Allen, was not injured in the crash.

Recalled by Louisiana company: drink mix a dangerous product

Most people enjoy a nice cocktail once and a while. Most people would never suspect that enjoying a drink with their friends could subject them to a potential food allergy. After neglecting to list all the correct ingredients on its bottles of Bloody Mary mix, a Louisiana company has issued a recall of this potentially dangerous product.

The company, Sirocco, made bottles of Pat O'Brien's Bloody Mary Cocktail Mix, distributed across the United States and online, which contained soy and wheat but didn't list the ingredients on the product label. This poses a huge potential food allergy. Many people suffer from food allergies, including from soy and wheat products. The side effects could be anything from a simple stomach ache to throat swelling and airway restriction. Because food allergies are potentially deadly, this product recall should be taken very seriously.

Two people die, 62 injured in massive Louisiana car accident

A tragic accident is still being investigated after 40 cars were involved in a pileup late last week. The car accident caused a section of the Louisiana highway to be closed to traffic in both directions on Interstate 10 shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday.

Two people died in the accident, and 62 others were injured. The cause is still being determined, but it is believed that heavy smoke or fog contributed to the accident that one tow truck driver said was the worst accident he's ever seen.

Popular children's bears are dangerous products, choking hazards

They may be cute and cuddly, but today the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Build-A-Bear Workshop Inc., announced the recall of one of their famous stuffed bears, saying the eyes of the stuffed animal can become loose and cause a choking hazard.

Choking hazards on dangerous products pose great risks to young children. The company is recalling over 284,000 of their Colorful Hearts Teddy because of the hazard. It isn't clear if any injuries or deaths have resulted from the bears in Louisiana or elsewhere in the United States, but parents should take caution and return the bears if they purchased this model from a Build-A-Bear workshop or online.
